Role of a CNM/CM

Licensed midwives provide primary care to women throughout their lives. This care includes all stages of women’s lives, i.e., menarche and preconception care, gynecology, pregnancy and childbirth and on into peri-menopause, menopause and post menopause. Midwives can perform physical examinations, take complete histories, diagnose and treat common gynecologic problems and common health problems, prescribe medications, perform minor surgical procedures such as suturing lacerations of childbirth, order diagnostic and laboratory tests, and counsel women regarding family planning and menopause. All incorporate health teaching and counseling as important components of midwifery care and many offer information on natural alternatives for women’s health.

To verify that an individual is professionally licensed in New York State go to the State Education Department Office of the Professions at www.op.nysed.gov and find Midwifery licensure verification.
