On October 1, 2011 NYC Midwives and Choices in Childbirth will kick off their celebration of National Midwifery Week by co-hosting the Ninth Annual Miles for Midwives run in Prospect Park. The 5K fun-run, the pee-wee race and Birth & Wellness fair is expected to attract more than 400 participants to show their support for the important work of midwives in New York City and to enjoy the wonders of running in the park.
“Midwifery is making a comeback in New York City as women of all ages become more familiar with their options in childbirth and well-woman care,” said midwife Anne Gibeau, Chair, NYC Midwives, the New York City Chapter of Midwives. “This is a trend we’re seeing more broadly in our society today, as people reevaluate the impact of their decisions on their environment and their lives.”
“More and more families are choosing midwives and are experiencing deeply satisfying birth experiences as well as optimal birth outcomes,” said Elan McAllister, President, Choices in Childbirth. “We are dedicated to helping families make the birth choices that are right for them and insuring that they have access to all safe, satisfying forms of maternity services, including midwifery care.”

The Board of Directors voted approval in early August. Once NYSALM has developed the micro page that each affiliate has on the ACNM web page, more functions and better communication will be available.
Jean Moore Director for Health Workforce Studies from the University of Albany SUNY, is soliciting the cooperation of all midwives in this state-wide effort to collect essential data on midwifery practice. All midwives will receive a survey form in the near future for immediate completion. From then onward, each will receive a survey form every three years when you renew your midwifery registration for licensure. It is a short (10 minutes) survey. It may also be completed on line at: http://chws.albany.edu/midwife
Workforce data is driving funding for education and practice among all health care professions. Midwives need to be counted.
